Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine and describe the descriptive experiences of seafarers during the pandemic. The study utilized Husserlian Descriptive Phenomenology and Collazzi’s Seven Steps of Data Analysis to analyze and depict the narrated experiences of the seafarers. Five seafarers were selected through purposive sampling. Four thematic clusters were identified from their narrated experiences: fear and hardship, weakness and hope, trust and faith, understanding and appreciation. The results revealed similarities in aspects related to their goal of leaving the country and boarding a ship to earn a living, while differences emerged in their reasons, motivations, and situations. It was also discovered that family or loved ones were the main driving force behind their seafaring endeavors despite the ongoing pandemic. The researcher believes that the findings of this study are significant as they highlight the sacrifices and influence of seafarers for themselves, their families, and the nation. It is recommended that government officials strengthen and solidify livelihood projects in the country to provide alternatives for seafarers in case they are unable to board a ship for any reason or have reached retirement age. In teaching language and literature, it is recommended to use the descriptive narratives of seafarers.
