Abstract:

This study aimed to determine of the spoken word poetry can be utilized in teaching contemporary literature. Qualitative analysis was employed in the study’s design. The data consisted of 20 spoken word poetry pieces gathered from you Tube. The collected data were analyzed, scrutinized, interpreted through content analysis. The following were discovered: the messages contained in spoken word poetry that can be used in teaching contemporary literature revolve around issues of love for people, language and things in the environment, responsibility, tradition, beliefs, and health. The implications to this to the community, teachers, students and administrators are in cultural aspects are enriching the culture inherited from ancestors such as good customs. In sociological terms, having one’s own convictions, being resilient, resourceful in facing problems and being true to feelings. Psychologically, being honest always and providing proper service. Politically, not turning to blind eye to justice, not being blind and deaf. The output produced is a video lesson that can be used in online and offline teaching. The following recommendations are: Teachers should use the video lesson as an additional teaching strategy. Familiarize oneself with the modern method of expression through creating spoken word poetry. Expand teacher’s appreciation for newly developed tools. It is recommended to use spoken word poetry in assessment to enhance students’ skills and abilities in writing and expressing their knowledge and experiences. Conduct further studies on the topic of the current research.
