Abstract:
Motivation is crucial in the learning process, most significantly in learning a second or foreign language. The purpose of the research study is to find out the motivational intensity level and desire to learn English of the respondents as anchored on Gardner’s motivational theory. The study used a quantitative design, particularly descriptive statistical methods like mean, median, and standard deviation. The Statistical Package for Social Science Research (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The respondents were the third-year secondary students randomly selected from public schools in one DepEd division in Region 8, Philippines. Motivational Intensity Scale and the Desire to Learn English Scale, adapted from Gardner, were used as instruments. The findings revealed that the respondents demonstrated high levels of motivational intensity and a strong desire to learn English, indicating that they were highly motivated to engage in English language learning. It is recommended that future research should investigate the relationship between motivational intensity, desire to learn English, and students’ English language proficiency in the Philippine context using correlational or predictive research designs. Comparative studies are also recommended to examine whether motivational intensity and the desire to learn English vary across students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Investigating the influence of socioeconomic status on learners’ motivation may offer valuable insights into educational inequalities and guide the formulation of equitable language education policies and targeted support programs for diverse learner populations.
