Abstract:
Oppression is considered a stigma in the society which affects Filipinos’ mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Relative to this is the alarming situation of each Filipino family who strive to elevate life from poverty. Addressing this societal issue remains a great challenge while continuously aiming for a balanced society. This research is a qualitative type of study using the content analysis method to analyze and assess the critical role played by the elements of the short story in highlighting the thought and spirit of the work entitled “Inuuod na Bisig sa Tiyan ng Buwaya” by Rogelio Ordoñez which was written in the ’60s. The researchers comprehensively analyzed the literary piece to emphasize the morale and concepts that can raise awareness among Filipino people. The analysis revealed the significant and vital role of the elements of the short story, specifically the character, theme and symbolism used by the author to form its general overview of the problem. The literary work emphasized several societal themes that are still present in the modern era, including the mistreatment of workers, the abuse of power by those in positions of authority, and the payment of poor salaries in exchange for workers’ awful labor. According to the study’s findings, a specific plan and project should be implemented to reduce the percentage of the Filipino population living in poverty. Examples of such projects include land reforms, a boost to the nation’s economy, increased business activity, and a reduction in the country’s inflation rate to help the poor with their everyday needs.
