Abstract:

The Filipino curriculum in tertiary education aims to cultivate the communicative ability of each student. To achieve this successfully, grammatical ability must be cultivated. Because of this, it is important to study the students’ grammatical ability to address any problems related to it and to develop language tools that can help further develop the students’ grammatical ability so that they can further improve their skills in communication. This study specifically aims to assess the grammatical errors of students in writing narrative essays that still need to be developed, identify the factors that affect students in their grammatical errors in writing narrative essays, and develop language tools that will respond to the error students’ grammar. This study was conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2023-2024 on a group of 33 college students. A descriptive-qualitative design was used. Three sets of students’ papers were analyzed to determine their grammatical errors in content and function words. Validated guide questions were used to determine the factors that affect students’ grammatical errors. The result of the first and second problems became the basis for the language material that was developed. It came out of the study that pronouns and pang-angkop have the most mistakes students make in writing a narrative essay. There are factors that affect students in their grammatical errors, such as lack of knowledge on grammar, inappropriate use of technology, and lack of time management. A module to be used as a supplemental material was developed as an output of the study.
