Abstract:
This study investigates the relationships and potential mediation between cognitive distortion, agentic engagement, and academic self-efficacy among Chinese Generation Alpha students. Generation Alpha, born between 2010 and 2025, is the first generation to grow up fully immersed in a digital world, posing new challenges and opportunities for education. While prior research has explored the link between agentic engagement and academic self-efficacy, the connection between these two factors and cognitive distortion remains underexplored. The study aims to address this gap by examining the cognitive patterns, engagement levels, and academic self-beliefs of Chinese students, with a specific focus on how agentic engagement may mediate the effects of cognitive distortion on self-efficacy. A total of 1,155 Chinese Generation Alpha students were surveyed to assess their cognitive distortions, agentic engagement, and academic self-efficacy, while also considering demographic factors such as sex, age, grade level, location, and family income. The findings of this study provide insights into how these variables interact and offer recommendations for educational interventions that foster more positive cognitive patterns, higher engagement, and stronger academic self-beliefs among students. The results underscore the importance of addressing cognitive distortions and supporting agentic engagement to enhance academic self-efficacy and promote successful learning outcomes in the digital age.
