Abstract:
Reading is a multifaceted process in developing general knowledge and understanding of the world. Children’s stories are used to teach children proper behavior, knowledge, and life skills. In this study, selected Ilocano children’s stories were gathered and analyzed to understand the child’s concept, as well as the conflicts they face based on the content of the literature. A qualitative research approach was used in this study. Through content analysis and thematic analysis, the concepts of the child and the conflicts they faced as characters in the literature were analyzed and identified. From the gathered data, four child concepts were identified: child and their caregivers; child and poverty; child and single-parent guardian; and child and innocence. Three conflicts were also identified from the stories: human versus self; human versus society; and human versus human. The evolution of the child as a character within the story was also observed from the analyzed children’s stories. There was also an attempt to depict some social problems through the character or concept of the child in the content of the literature. Deep reading and analysis of other children’s stories written in different languages are important to further understand the child’s reimagination as the primary character in children’s stories and to identify other emerging social issues related to children.
