Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze the unique beliefs of Waraynon elders regarding menstruation. The rich culture of Filipinos in terms of cultural beliefs relative to the puberty stage of every female, and the Filipino values reflected in the beliefs became the foundation of this study. Although Tacloban City is considered highly urbanized, the rich beliefs and good customs of every Waraynon family can still be seen, especially in raising children. Using the ethnographic research design, the researcher was able to determine the beliefs of Waraynon elders on the first period of a female’s menstruation which include the following: use of “bulong” on herbal medicines, personal belongings of the female, and other things at home that would ease the feeling of a female on her first menstruation. Going near the seashore or farm is also being avoided. The elder natives believe that menstruation is unusual that’s why the practice of following beliefs is being valued to keep the female from any form of harm. The study also shows the good values of the Waraynons such as showing care to parents by following the beliefs on menstrual cycle, and valuing physical environment that is part of the cultural practice known as “bulong”. Hence, it is recommended to document narratives on folks’ cultural beliefs and practices to preserve local literature in the country.
