Abstract:
The study assessed the engagement of technical college graduates in self-employment projects in Tanzania. This study was carried out in Dar es salaam City, Tanzania. The study used a mixed-methods research approach and an explanatory sequential design. The study had a sample of 200 respondents namely technical college graduates, deputy rectors academic and tutors/lecturers from three selected technical institutions. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires and interviews. Data were analysed thematically (for qualitative data) and descriptive analysis (for quantitative data). The findings revealed that most respondents (73%) agreed that technical college graduates had a positive perception of the potential benefits of engaging in self-employment projects, with (63%) agreed on the engagement of technical graduates in self-employment projects. A significant of (71%) technical college graduates expressed that they used their skills in self-employment projects. Moreover, the study established that (71%) were familiar with the concept of self-employment and its potential in their field of study. Furthermore, technical college graduates participated in workshops or seminars that focused on the practical aspects of self-employment projects. Lastly, the study demonstrated that despite expressing confidence in identifying and pursuing self-employment opportunities within their technical expertise, a notable portion also acknowledged the challenges engaging in self-employment projects, highlighting the need for continued support and resources. Based on the findings, the study recommends that technical institutions under Ministry of Education, Science and Technology expand practical training programmes and the government should provide targeted financial support to technical college graduates to participate fully in self-employments projects in Tanzania.
