Abstract:
This study examined Generation Z words and their meaning used by the junior high school students enrolled in Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) program of Capiz in three National High School in the Schools Division of Capiz, Philippines for school year 2022-2023. This study employed a mixed methods approach to investigate Generation Z language among 260 students in Grades 7-10. Data were collected through questionnaires, checklists, interviews, and a legend of morphological processes. The study identified 326 Generation Z words and 14 morphological processes, with combination/multiple processes and borrowing being the most frequent. Thematic analysis revealed that students use Generation Z language as a way of expressing one’s emotions and thoughts, styles of personal expression, ways of communication, interaction, and a sense of belongingness, meaningful usage based on a situation, context, and to someone talking with, as influenced by their friends, it gives a feeling of being part of the group and has its positive use. The findings suggest that Generation Z language is influenced by peer groups and serves as a positive social marker.
