Abstract:
Tayaw is an indigenous dance which is considered an important part of any festival in Benguet that needs to be preserved and needs to be revitalized. The Language of Tayaw as a Medium of Benguet’s Identity aims to explore the language of Tayaw, it’s socio cultural implications and how to effectively preserve its practice. This study utilized qualitative method and used descriptive design. The participants in the study were selected elders and leaders of the Ibaloy community in the province of Benguet. It was discovered that the Tayaw express healing of illness or disease, an expression of gratitude, a way of asking blessing from the Almighty, and a way of expressing happiness. The sociological and cultural implications of Tayaw are: a symbol of unity, show of cultural respect, expression of good behavior, instrument for achieving peace, and a medium for cooperation. The effective methods for the preservation of the Tayaw are: it should be included in school activities; people should participate in dancing the Tayaw in a festivals or ceremonies; and conduct competitions related to indigenous dances. Tayaw is an important part of the culture in Benguet which cannot be removed because it played a big role in shaping the good customs and characteristics of the people. It serves as a medium of identity. Studying indigenous practices has proven to be important to better understand and fully recognize a community’s language and an important step in cultural preservation.
