Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the Filipino geriatric patients’ caring encounters during their hospitalization which will serve as basis for improving geriatric care. This employed a phenomenological research design, specifically targeting a diverse group of ten (10) geriatric patients aged 60 and above at the Aglipay District Hospital. The use of open- ended questions, as outlined in the attached research questionnaire, aimed to encourage participants to share rich and detailed narratives about their experiences. Coding and thematic analysis ware used to analyze the data. The experiences of geriatric patients during hospitalization revealed that compassionate care, effective communication, and the presence of dedicated healthcare providers significantly impact their overall well-being. From the standpoint of geriatric patients, cleanliness, attentive personnel, and a supporting environment are critical components of caring encounters. To improve the geriatric patients’ caring encounters during their hospitalization, healthcare professionals should be trained effectively in communicating with geriatric patients. This will ensure that information about drugs, treatment plans, and patient progress is communicated understandably and engagingly. Training on cultural sensitivity in staff development initiatives should be included to guarantee that patients are treated with dignity and compassion, considering their varied backgrounds and communication styles.
