Talent development, career advancement practices, and employee performance among pharma companies: Basis for an enhanced sales competency strategy

Abstract:

The pharmaceutical sector is a competitive industry, and the growth of companies is oftentimes reliant on how productive their sales team is. There are effective practices for developing and promoting talent, which are crucial in managing a high performance sales force. This study, therefore, seeks to establish the relationship of talent development, career advancement practices on employee performance in Beijing China’s pharmaceuticals industries. Through this exploration, the research sought to find effective measures in regard to building a strong sales competency framework that will increase the effectiveness of the sales team and the organization as a whole. The descriptive design was used the present study as it seeks to investigate elements or relationships among variables. In this context, the purpose is to show the current trends, issues and possible solutions in talent development, career growth, and employee productivity in the pharmaceutical sector in the city of Beijing. The researcher designed and created a self-made questionnaire as it was easier for him to manage all the aspects including the phrasing, arrangement and subject matter of the questions. 400 Sales staff from 15 pharmaceutical companies were the participants of the study as they have firsthand experience and were able to rate how well they work in boosting productivity. Based on the results, the respondents generally agreed on the talent development is aligned with business strategies, sufficient training resources are available, and the training content is appropriate to the company strategic objectives. They were also generally in favor of the career advancement opportunities offered by the company, including career pathing, succession planning, coaching and mentoring. The findings of the research revealed an agreement about the three factors of performance regarding the individual factors, job factors and organizational factors. There is no significant relationship between Talent Development, Career Advancement Practices and Employee Performance. A sales competency enhancement strategy was formulated for the pharmaceutical companies.
