Abstract:

The general objective of the study was to assess the communicative competence of foreign students at Cebu Doctors’ University in order to develop a lesson exemplar. The study employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods in analyzing the data to address the research problems. A checklist and rubric were used in evaluating communicative competence based on the respondents’ reading of a speech. After a thorough analysis of the data, it was found that the number of male respondents was higher. The findings also revealed that most of the foreign students at Cebu Doctors’ University came from non-native English-speaking countries. Meanwhile, regarding the length of stay of foreign students in the Philippines, the majority answered 1 to 4.5 years. English was identified as the primary language used and understood by the foreign students. The overall communicative level was rated as good, and a large percentage of the students were bilingual. It was discovered that the longer the students stayed in the Philippines, the higher their proficiency in Filipino communicative competence became. The study confirmed the need for teachers to have knowledge about the level of oral communicative competence in order to provide effective learning activities through modifications that consider the learners’ level of skills and knowledge in the target language.
