Abstract:
The language of instruction plays an important role in promoting students’ understanding and content mastery in Araling Panlipunan. This study determined how the use of Filipino as the language of instruction influenced the content mastery of Grade 10 students during the introductory lessons on Mga Kontemporaryong Isyu. A quantitative one-group pretest-posttest design with a descriptive survey was employed involving 31 Grade 10 students selected through total population sampling. A researcher-made 30-item achievement test was used as the pre-test and post-test, while a Likert-scale questionnaire assessed students’ perceptions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test through Jamovi. Results showed that the mean pre-test score (Mean = 15.40, SD = 4.79) increased to a mean post-test score (Mean = 22.90, SD = 3.91). A paired-samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, t (30) = -10.90, p < .001. Moreover, students generally agreed that Filipino facilitated their understanding of the lessons (Overall Mean = 3.87). The findings suggest that Filipino-mediated instruction supported students’ content mastery and may serve as an effective language of instruction in teaching introductory lessons in Araling Panlipunan.
