Abstract:
This research contributes to the achievement of two Sustainable Development Goals. First is SGD 4, Quality Education where this study seeks to improve the quality of education by assessing each student’s level of understanding and to what instructional interventions should be used based on the findings. The other one is Sustainable Development Goal 10, Reduced Inequalities. This study focuses on addressing learning gaps to reduce disparities in students’ academic performance and to give each learner an equal opportunity towards learning. It was examined in this study the level of students understanding from the details and visual texts in El Filibusterismo based on the result of the pre-assessment. The study determined to which part in the pre-assessment that the students answered the item easily, where they experienced difficulty, and the appropriate instructional activities and interventions that may be developed based on the results. The study used a mixed method research design and utilized purposive sampling involving 151 Grade 10 students. The frequency, percentage, and mean were used as statistical tools to describe the students’ performance. This study revealed that the students had not yet achieved the expected level of learning, the mastery level. Students demonstrated better performance on questions related to values and moral judgment but experienced difficulty in interpreting symbolism and visual texts and specific details. From this result, there is a need to use interactive strategies and interventions on teaching to deepen students’ critical understanding of the details and visual texts in El Filibusterismo.
