Abstract:
This study is anchored on three (3) sustainable development goals. First, the quality education, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge of students in folk literature (karunungang-bayan) to be able to know their understanding on the topic through a test that has been administered. Second is sustainable cities, it is relevant to the study as it sought to identify which type of folk literature reflects the highest and lowest levels of knowledge. Third, reduced inequality, as this study aimed to (1) analyze the students’ level of knowledge in understanding folk literature; (2) identify the type of folk literature that demonstrated the highest and lowest levels of knowledge; and (3) draw implications that will serve as the basis for developing an instructional material or learning guide. This study used a descriptive research design, the data were analyzed using weighted mean and percentage frequency, distribution, and it employed a cluster random sampling in selecting the respondents. The result of the study implies that the students’ level of knowledge in folk literature is at moving towards mastery level, the riddles (bugtong) obtained the highest level of knowledge, while idioms (sawikain) garnered the lowest level of knowledge. It indicates that students still need continuous guidance to further develop their capacity in understanding folk literature.
