Abstract:
This study aimed to document the beliefs and customs of the Waray people regarding wedding celebrations. A descriptive research design was employed to describe and analyze the prevailing beliefs within the community. Data were gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire that elicited participants’ knowledge and experiences concerning wedding traditions. The findings revealed that Waray culture is rich in customs and beliefs related to marriage and wedding celebrations. These traditions begin during the courtship stage, particularly with the formal visit of the man to the woman’s family to seek the parents’ permission and blessing. Various beliefs that are thought to influence the couple’s married life were also identified. These include the prohibition against trying on the wedding attire before the wedding day, the throwing of the bridal bouquet, the performance of ado (a traditional wedding dance), and the preparation of live animals as symbols of prosperity. The study further found that serving chicken and octopus during wedding celebrations is avoided because these are associated with beliefs that may bring misfortune to the married couple. Moreover, unique Waray wedding-related beliefs were identified during the panunuluyan, such as pangungurukay (the crowing of a rooster) and the offering of money and rice as symbols of a prosperous and stable married life. The documentation and study of these beliefs contribute to the enrichment and preservation of Waray cultural traditions. Furthermore, the findings serve as a valuable contribution to local literature and to the broader understanding of the rich culture and perspectives of the Waray people regarding marriage and family life.
