Abstract:

Punctuation is not a design in written text, but it plays a significant role in the overall function of the output because it completes the idea that the sender wants to convey. It also serves as a guide to the true meaning of the message. Hence, it is imperative to have adequate awareness of the rules for correct punctuation usage. However, one of the challenges teachers face inside the classroom is the frequent incorrect use of punctuations by students. From that, a descriptive-quantitative study was conducted to 155 senior high school students from one of the public high schools in Dulag, Leyte, selected through stratified sampling. The study aims to determine the reading materials they read, their reasons for reading, and their level of awareness on the rules for correct usage of punctuations based on the Commission on Official Languages Manual. Results of the study revealed that most student respondents read newspaper articles, with broadening their knowledge being the primary reason for reading. It was also found out in the study that student respondents were aware of 10 punctuations, while they were moderately aware of 6 punctuations. The study recommends that teachers should encourage their students to read more materials to become more familiar with the sentence structure, and the use of punctuations. Additionally, further studies should be conducted to determine the relationship between the frequency of reading resource materials and awareness of correct punctuation usage.
