Abstract:
Learning is a dynamic process involving both teachers and students, with assessment serving as a crucial component. Quizzes, according to prior studies, exert varied effects on learners, including those enrolled in Nursing programs. However, no existing research has explored the experiences of Nursing students with short quizzes in Filipino—a significant gap, given the expectation that they will effectively utilize the language in their profession. This study therefore aimed to (1) examine students’ experiences, (2) identify factors influencing their success or failure, and (3) gather suggestions for designing effective Filipino assessments. Employing an explanatory sequential design, a survey was conducted among 101 students, followed by interviews with ten participants. Results revealed that Filipino quizzes (1) serve as a basis for student learning and (2) highlight areas requiring further study. Students reported higher success rates when examinations were announced early, while failure was attributed to (1) lack of diligence, (2) reliance on verbal questioning, (3) the structure of test items, and (4) forgetting previously studied material. Suggested improvements included (1) the use of printed questionnaires, (2) the construction of concise questions using familiar words, and (3) the administration of immediate quizzes after discussions. Overall, Nursing students demonstrated diverse experiences shaped by multiple factors, underscoring the importance of integrating their recommendations in the development of more effective Filipino assessments, with potential applications across other disciplines.
