Abstract:
This study identified common grammar teaching approaches used by third-year English major students at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST), Philippines, and evaluated the perceived effectiveness of an eclectic approach in grammar instruction. Employing a quantitative descriptive research design with purposive sampling, data were collected from 58 respondents via an online survey questionnaire administered through Google Forms. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage analysis, and ranking. Findings indicate the frequent use of task-based, direct, audio-lingual, and silent way methods, all reported by 96.55% of respondents. Common pairings—notably Task-Based Language Teaching with the Grammar-Translation Method, and Communicative Language Teaching with the Direct Method—suggest established eclectic tendencies in the classroom. Students perceived the eclectic approach positively, most strongly agreeing that it created a more interesting classroom atmosphere (WM = 4.37). The approach was also found to be practical for learning basic grammar and effective in fostering a conducive classroom environment. This research underscores the value of blended, principled methodologies in foundational grammar instruction for university English students and contributes to the growing body of literature on eclectic pedagogy in Philippine higher education.
