Abstract:
This study titled “The Communicative Orientation of English Language Teaching Practices at Narvacan National Central High School”, aimed to thoroughly investigate the extent to which communicative methodologies are implemented in English classrooms and to determine the challenges encountered by teachers in applying the Communicative Orientation to Language Teaching (COLT) framework. Specifically, it sought to: (1) describe the profile of the faculty in terms of years of teaching experience, highest educational attainment, and trainings attended; (2) determine the level of implementation of communicative orientation in classroom activities and communicative features based on both teachers’ perceptions and classroom observations; (3) identify the challenges teachers face in implementing communicative orientation in their English classes; and (4) develop a valid COLT training design for language teachers based on the results of the study. The study employed a mixed-method research design to obtain a comprehensive understanding of communicative patterns in language classrooms, wherein quantitative and qualitative data were collected simultaneously, analyzed separately, and merged during interpretation. The participants included nine English teachers of Narvacan National Central High School, and data were gathered through surveys, classroom observations, and interviews. Findings revealed that the respondents were academically qualified and moderately experienced, with most holding master’s degrees or academic units. However, professional development was largely limited to local trainings. Both teachers’ perceptions and observation results showed a strong implementation of communicative-oriented strategies in classroom activities, content, materials, and interaction features, though some aspects. It particularly content control and interaction it remained moderately implemented. Challenges identified included students’ low English proficiency, limited authentic materials, time constraints, and large class sizes, which moderately hindered the full realization of communicative learning. Despite these, teachers maintained positive attitudes toward COLT and recognized its importance in fostering communicative competence. Based on the results, a proposed training program for English teachers was developed and rated to have Very High Validity, indicating its feasibility for implementation by the Department of Education, Schools Division of Ilocos Sur, Narvacan District.
