Abstract:

Food security and environmental sustainability remain critical challenges worldwide. Coffee shop food donation programs offer an innovative approach to address these concerns, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). This study evaluates the effectiveness of food donation programs in Makati City coffee shops, particularly Starbucks Philippines, in reducing food waste and improving food security. A quantitative, descriptive design was employed, surveying 103 Starbucks employees across multiple branches. Data collection utilized a structured online questionnaire validated by experts and reliability-tested using Cronbach’s Alpha. Findings reveal a very high extent of program implementation across donation processes, partnerships, employee involvement, and program management. Significant reductions in food waste and improvements in resource efficiency were reported. Environmental impacts included reduced methane emissions through diversion of surplus food from landfills, aligning with SDG 13 (Climate Action). Additionally, the programs promoted responsible consumption and enhanced compliance with sustainability goals. Challenges in logistics, food safety, and community awareness were identified, suggesting areas for improvement. The study highlights the dual benefits of these initiatives—addressing local food insecurity and fostering sustainable practices. Policy recommendations include optimizing logistics, enhancing partnerships, and integrating innovative technologies to scale impact. These findings demonstrate the potential for food donation programs to create meaningful change in urban food systems while supporting corporate social responsibility.
