Abstract:

The Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) majors in Filipino and the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) major in Filipino have a 5-year (2019-2024) Community Extension Project titled Karunungan ay Mahalaga sa Pagbasa Makikita or Reading Leads to Wisdom. The project is under the Leyte Normal University (LNU) Extension Agenda to improve Literacy, Numeracy, and Language (Waray and Filipino). Its purpose is to help the communities in the neighboring barangays of LNU where Barangay 49-Youngfield of the City of Tacloban was chosen. This study focused on the impact assessment of the 5-year community extension project as stated in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) conducted by the Graduate School and the College of Education of LNU. Using the mixed method research design, the level of proficiency in the language (Waray and Filipino) was determined based on the pre-test and post-test provided each year, with 20 items for each subject. From the approved Consent Form of the beneficiaries’ parents, qualitative data was obtained from the beneficiaries and their parents. Based on the result, all the pre-test and post-test efficiencies were between no and very low efficiency, while the post-test was between very low and moderate. According to the beneficiaries’ experiences, they found it difficult to learn when the pandemic hit, even though the LNU modules were provided. In addition, the parents confirmed what the young beneficiaries said because they had difficulty helping their children learn. The beneficiary youth and their parents mentioned that they are very grateful and indebted to LNU for choosing their barangay because, during the pandemic, LNU was able to share wisdom and even food that they needed, and they had nothing to cling to. Therefore, the project needs to be continued although the barangay captain and parents of the community begged to continue the project in their barangay, the Overall Project Leader decided to share the services of the teachers who handle the aforementioned program and major in other neighboring barangays of LNU not just one but more than one barangay because there are many Extension Workers of LNU.
