Abstract:
The study examined the effectiveness of the SQ3R strategy on the reading comprehension of seventh-grade students at Lanas National High School during the school year 2022–2023, as a guide for developing reading instructional materials. The study assessed students’ pretest performance using traditional reading instruction. It also evaluated the students’ post-test performance after using the SQ3R strategy. In addition, the study identified its impact on students’ interest in reading and on retention. A descriptive correlational research design was used to assessed students’ performance in reading comprehension. The findings revealed that respondents’ pretest performance in reading comprehension was at moderate to low levels. Meanwhile, their post-test performance improved, reaching the approaching mastery level based on the identified competencies. The results indicate a significant difference between the pretest and post-test reading comprehension performances. This demonstrates that the SQ3R strategy is a valuable supplementary approach that can help enrich comprehension and should be considered by teachers in reading instruction. The study also revealed that SQ3R increases students’ interest in reading and fosters retention. The study concluded that the SQ3R strategy can help enhance and develop selected MELC’s in Reading for Filipino 7.
