Abstract:

This study focused on the use of Filipino words on social media, specifically analyzing the language of Grade 10 students at Celestino G. Tabuena Memorial National High School in Sorsogon City. It aimed to examine how students used Filipino words in terms of word structure, punctuation, language level, word usage, and sentence construction. The study involved 144 students and three Filipino teachers, using data gathered from questionnaires, Facebook posts on the Filipino 10 page, and interviews. Results showed that students had limited knowledge of proper punctuation, often used formal language levels, displayed confusion in spelling and word usage, wrote simple sentences, and lacked organization in their ideas and content. Overall, the findings indicated low proficiency in using Filipino words. A writing guide material was developed, covering Filipino grammar and orthography, word structure, punctuation, language levels, and sentence construction. The study recommended that teachers dedicate a few minutes each day to strengthening students’ grammar skills and promoting short conversations to improve both oral and written communication.
