Abstract:

This study explores the perceptions of college students on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in writing poetry, focusing on its implications for creativity, emotional depth, and linguistic expression. With the increasing integration of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT in creative writing tasks, the research aims to understand how these technologies affect students’ engagement with poetic forms and language. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study involved 30 student participants who responded to a survey and open-ended questions. Results revealed that while students acknowledge the convenience, speed, and linguistic accuracy offered by AI, they also express concerns about its lack of personal voice, emotional authenticity, and cultural context. The findings suggest that students value poetry as a medium of personal and affective expression, which they believe AI cannot fully replicate. The study is anchored in Constructivist Learning Theory and Technological Mediation Theory, providing a pedagogical and philosophical lens to examine AI’s role in creative writing. Based on the results, the study recommends integrating critical discussions on AI ethics, authorship, and human creativity in literature and writing courses.
