Abstract:
The transition from higher education to employment remains a significant challenge for many graduates in Tanzania, raising questions about the effectiveness of university curricula in preparing students for the labor market. This study explores the influence of higher learning curricula on graduate employability in Universities in Mwanza, Tanzania. The study was guided by three objectives: to examine the alignment between the University’s curricula, the skills and competencies demanded by employers; to explore employers’ alumni’s perceptions of graduate employability; to evaluate key curriculum components, including practical skills, internship experiences, and training in influencing employability outcomes. The study adopted a mixed approach using convergent parallel design. Sample size of 200 participants was drawn from a target population of 3000. Questionnaire and interview guide was adopted. Credibility of the instrument was checked giving a total 87.0 correlation coefficient. Trustworthiness of qualitative tools was done. The study highlights the urgent need for curriculum reform that prioritize practical competencies, active collaboration with industry stakeholders and responsiveness to evolving labor market demands to enhance the employability of graduates in Tanzania. The researcher recommended: The higher education institutions should implement the policy which supports frequent review of courses curricular so as to relate with job market demands.
