Abstract:

This study examines the impact of students’ study habits and learning environment on their academic performance in Statistics and Probability, an area where students globally, including in the Philippines, continue to struggle despite advancements in teaching strategies. In the 21st century, critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical literacy are increasingly important; however, students’ performance in these subjects remains low. The research uses a descriptive-correlational design to explore the relationship between study habits, the learning environment, and academic performance. Significant relationships were found between these factors, with notable differences observed between schools. The study highlights that while students generally exhibit strong study habits, particularly in motivation, weaknesses in note-taking and limited access to learning resources hinder their performance, especially in Statistics and Probability. While study habits have a strong influence on academic success, the learning environment was found to have a weaker effect, suggesting that improvements in support systems and instructional quality are needed, particularly in underperforming schools. Based on the findings, the study recommends that schools focus on strengthening study habits, such as note-taking, time management, and motivation, through targeted workshops, mentorship, and personalized academic support. Additionally, enhancing the learning environment by improving access to resources, refining instructional strategies, and fostering student engagement will contribute to long-term academic success.
