Abstract:

Despite the implementation of language policies such as bilingual education in the Philippines, it cannot be denied that code-switching occurs in Filipino, Social Studies, and Values Education classes where Filipino is the medium of instruction. This situation has paved the way to study the types, communicative functions, frequency, and attitudes of teachers and students towards code-switching in teaching Filipino, Social Studies, and Values Education in Grade 7 of three (3) Science High School in three Divisions of Negros Oriental, Philippines. The research design is a combination of exploratory-qualitative-statistical and exploratory-quantitative interpretative. Methodological triangulation was also used; classroom observations, survey-questionnaires, and focus group discussions were conducted to gather data. The data was gathered from eight (8) teacher respondents and one hundred twelve (112) student respondents. The study revealed four main results: 1) in terms of the types of code-switching used by teachers in class, inter-sentential switching was predominant in the survey, analysis from actual observations, and interviews; 2) in terms of the communicative functions of code-switching used by the teachers in class, the following were prominent in the survey: lack of register, emphasizing a point, addressing different audience, and attracting attention; 3) in terms of frequency of use, teachers often used habitual expressions; 4) in terms of teachers’ attitudes, they were positive with a weighted mean of 4.21 (strongly agree), and  students were also positive with a weighted mean of 4.08 (agree), indicating the significant help of code-switching. In conclusion, it shows that code-switching plays an important role in teaching Filipino, Social Studies, and Values Education that teachers should pay attention to.
