Abstract:
This paper explored on the effect of graphic novels for the students’ ability to comprehend Filipino literature after reading. One- group quasi- experimental, particularly the non- equivalent dependent variable was utilized as the research design. The scores during pre- and post- tests served as the primary source of data from the respondents of thirty- six (36) Grade 9 students in Filipino subject. The respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Results showed that the use of graphic novel in education is effective way to improve the students’ ability to comprehend the Filipino content. The significant difference of the pretest and post- test results showed when reading graphic novels increased their comprehension scores to comprehend Filipino content information after reading Filipino literature and was remarkably improving from beginning to approaching proficiency level. This means that the use of graphic novels positively effective in helping the students in understanding the pure text. In addition, students were able to readily supply facts learned from reading with the use of graphic novel and they showed more interested in reading Filipino literature. Thus, the study recommends to use graphic novels in reading as an effective supplemental informational text for students’ ability to comprehend and learning especially for Philippine literature.
