Abstract:

This study aims to determine the experiences of non-Filipino major teachers teaching Filipino sa Piling Larang–Akademik in Senior High. The researcher used a descriptive survey to gather necessary research data. An interview and checklist were conducted by the researcher to obtain the required study data. Data were analyzed, examined, and interpreted with the aid of appropriate frequency counts or rankings. Various profiles of non-major teachers were assessed in terms of gender, age, completed course and major, educational attainment, years of teaching Filipino, and attended training/seminars. This study identifies the experiences including challenges in using the Filipino language and the problems faced by non-Filipino major teachers teaching Filipino which had both positive and negative effects. As a result of the study, it was recommended to focus on teachers teaching outside their majors. Attending training or seminar workshops provided by the KWF or any organization promoting the Filipino language would be beneficial for enhancing their knowledge of modern teaching methods or strategies. Continuing studies at a higher level, such as obtaining a Master’s degree in Filipino, was recommended to further increase their language proficiency, especially in teaching Filipino. Addressing the challenges faced by teachers, particularly the lack of knowledge in technical Filipino terminology, was emphasized. Technical assistance from subject matter experts or experienced teachers in Filipino instruction was suggested. Focus should be placed on the positive effects on non-major teachers in teaching the Filipino Subject. Moreover, providing broader solutions to its negative effects was advised.
