Abstract:
With the emergence of the new normal around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an abrupt shift in the education system as well as the way students learn. Founded on the heutagogical, constructivism, and online learning theories this research aspired to study the learning strategies, struggles as well as the alternative ways of learning of university students under the flexible learning modality. Employing the Explanatory Design: Participant Selection Model, this study had two phases. The first phase was done through a survey using a questionnaire that was conveyed to 377 students that were identified through Slovin formula and quota sampling; meanwhile, the second phase was executed through a one-on-one interview with 10 participants that were chosen through purposive sampling. The data from the first phase were analyzed and inferred using the weighted mean and a five-point Likert scale, while thematic analysis was utilized for the second phase. It was found that the students have different strategies and/or ways of learning in the new educational system, particularly under modular, synchronous, and asynchronous online learning. Moreover, the students were found having difficulties in learning hence; they have established alternative ways of learning for them to learn despite the current educational system. In line with the information stated above, the researchers have given recommendations relative to the results and conclusions of the study.
