Abstract:
Filipinos believe in marriage as a sacred union of two people brought together by fate and molded by time. This research is a qualitative study that utilized the content analysis approach. The researchers aimed to analyze the common marital problems reflected in the short story titled “Ang Halaman ni Angela” written by Diego Atienza Quisao. Purposive sampling was used by the researchers wherein ten (10) selected Filipino majors were the participants of the study. The criteria include the age of students (19 above), must have taken a subject related to literature, and the number of years spent studying in LNU (2-4 years). The short story was analyzed through various lenses of literary theories – humanism, romanticism, and existentialism. The study strives to analyze the concept of marital decision, marital romance, attributes of man and woman as husband and wife, and how couples address the marital dilemma that they experience. Based on the results of the study, it showed that the story reflects the common marital problems in the context of Filipino families.
