Abstract:
One of the highlights of the K-12 curriculum is the implementation of Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education. After conducting pilot tests in different primary schools in the Philippines, it showed that using the first language of the student inside the classroom will help them easily understand their lessons. This qualitative-phenomenological study aimed to assess the implementation of MTB-MLE in a private school, to determine challenges the teachers encountered on the implementation of the program and to evaluate the current policy of MTB-MLE. The respondents were primary level teachers in private school teaching MTB-MLE. It was found that the private school does not fully exercise and comply in the policy of MTB-MLE. This paper found out that they are not using the mother tongue as a mode of instruction in all the subject areas, the time spent in studying MTB-MLE as a subject is 30-minutes instead of 50 minutes, the school determines the topics to be taught in MTB-MLE for the entire school year and they do not use the designed curriculum and modules presented by DepEd. There are no special classes conducted for the students whose mother tongue is not Tagalog. This study revealed that effectiveness of a policy will not be reflected in its rules and guidelines unless schools strictly adhere to all the rules so that the success of the program will be guaranteed for the objectives laid down. Indeed, the DepEd should evaluate the implementation of the program in the private schools.
