Abstract:
This study analyzed the change in students’ comprehension of literary works from the Propaganda and Revolution Period in usage of instructional materials. This study aligned in Constructivist Learning Theory and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), it addressed the reading crisis through scaffolding and contextualization to bridge gaps in understanding of deep language in historical context. The research used a quantitative approach, specifically a Pre-Experimental (One-Group Pretest-Posttest) design. Through purposive sampling, 50 Grade 8 students from a high school in Tacloban City were selected as participants of the study. A validated teacher-made test served as the research instrument, and data were analyzed using the mean, Standard Deviation (SD), and a paired samples t-test and was interpret using MPS. The pre-test results show an initial mean score of 19.96 (SD = 3.65; MPS = 66.53%). After utilization of a three-week intervention, post-test scores rose to 24.10 (SD = 2.76; MPS = 80.33%). Although both results fell within the “Moving Towards Mastery” performance level, the students demonstrated clear academic progress after the intervention. The paired samples t-test proved a statistically significant difference between the scores before and after the intervention. Because the computed p-value of 0.049 is less than the established significance level (Alpha = 0.05), the null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, the instructional intervention is highly effective in elevating students’ comprehension levels regarding historical literary works.
