Improving reading profile of Grade III pupils of Bambang Central School Integrated SPED Center through digitized Dolch sight words

Abstract:

This study investigated the effectiveness of the Digitized Basic Dolch Sight Words intervention in improving the early reading skills of Grade III pupils at Bambang Central School Integrated SPED Center during the School Year 2024–2025. Anchored on evidence-based early literacy instruction, the study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. A total of thirty-nine Grade III pupils, purposively selected based on identified reading difficulties, participated in the intervention. Data were gathered using a researcher-developed 30-item assessment tool measuring three core early literacy skills: letter-name identification, letter-sound correspondence, and phonological awareness. Descriptive statistics, including frequency and percentage, were used to describe pupils’ reading levels, while the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test determined the significance of differences between pretest and posttest scores. Results revealed that prior to the intervention, most pupils demonstrated low to moderate mastery across the assessed reading domains. After exposure to the Digitized Basic Dolch Sight Words intervention, all participants achieved grade-ready proficiency, indicating substantial improvement in foundational reading skills. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between pretest and posttest results (Z = −5.707, p < .01), affirming the effectiveness of the intervention. The findings suggest that digitized, multisensory sight word instruction can significantly enhance early reading performance. The study recommends integrating the intervention into regular reading programs and conducting longitudinal research to assess sustained learning outcomes.
