Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to analyse the symbolism in the realistic lives of the Cebuano people as reflected in selected songs by Max Surban. Using a qualitative content analysis design, ten (10) chosen songs were examined to identify elements of symbolism, figurative representation, social issues as themes, and the realities mirrored in Cebuano society. The results show that Surban’s songs are more than mere entertainment; they serve as meaningful reflections of Visayan’s culture and the real conditions of marginalized communities. Clear social themes emerged, such as poverty, lack of employment opportunities, urbanization, migration, belief in traditional healing, and unequal development. Through the artistic use of symbols and imagery, the songs express the resilience, hope, and collective emotions of the Cebuano people in the face of life’s challenges. Viewed through the lens of realism, Surban’s music functions as a social document that illustrates the relationship among art, language, and society. The study recommends further development of this type of analysis to preserve and strengthen regional music as an effective medium for social and cultural awareness in the Philippines.
