Sports environment, intentions, and performance among Chinese college students

Abstract:

This study aimed to assess the sports environment, intentions, and performance of Chinese college students, focusing on the relationship between these factors and their demographic profiles. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were male, 20 years old, science majors, and from urban areas. Students generally expressed moderate satisfaction with their sports environment, including facilities, accessibility, sports clubs, and social support. They also showed a moderate level of interest, motivation, and perceived benefits associated with sports, reflecting a positive but varied outlook on their engagement with physical activities. Similarly, respondents were generally satisfied with their sports performance, although there were differences in their frequency of participation, skill levels, and competitive achievements. Notably, significant variations in responses were found across demographic profiles, with males, students aged 23 and above, arts majors, and those from certain regions showing more favorable assessments. The study also identified a notable relationship between sports intention—such as interest, motivation, and perceived benefits—and sports performance indicators like participation frequency and skill levels. Based on these findings, the researcher proposed an enhanced sports development program aimed at improving the sports environment, boosting student motivation, and enhancing overall sports performance. This program seeks to foster a more conducive atmosphere for sports participation, increase students’ intentions to engage in sports, and support their athletic development.
