Abstract:

This study aimed to determine students’ level of understanding and the effectiveness of translation as a teaching strategy in the subject Filipino. Specifically, it examined the performance of Grade 12 students before and after discussing lessons in the first quarter with translation, as well as the significant difference between their scores in the pre-test and post-test. The study used a quantitative research design with pre-test and post-test involving two groups: experimental and control. It was conducted in a private school in Tacloban City, Leyte. The participants were selected through purposive sampling based on the criteria set by the study. Mean, standard deviation, and Paired Sample t-test were used to analyze the gathered data. The results showed that in the pre-test, the Experimental Group had a mean of 19.18 (SD = 3.49), while the Control Group had a mean of 14.55 (SD = 2.98). In the post-test, the mean of the Experimental Group increased to 25.36 (SD = 3.21), while the Control Group recorded a mean of 19.73 (SD = 5.52). The results showed that the performance of the Experimental Group improved more. Therefore, it was proven that the use of translation as a teaching strategy has a positive effect in improving students’ understanding and academic performance in the subject Filipino in a private school that uses English as the primary medium of instruction002E
