Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the perception and level of acceptance of Social Studies pre-service educators toward Filipino as a medium of instruction, as well as the relationship between these two variables. A descriptive-quantitative design was employed, involving 224 students from Eastern Samar State University – Guiuan Campus. Data were gathered through a questionnaire using a Likert Scale to measure their views and attitudes toward the use of Filipino in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Findings revealed that the overall perception of the participants toward Filipino obtained a mean of 4.73 with a standard deviation of 0.12, interpreted as Highly Recognized. This indicates a strong acknowledgment of Filipino as an integral tool for learning. Meanwhile, the overall acceptance of Filipino as a medium of instruction recorded a mean of 4.59 with a standard deviation of 0.20, interpreted as Highly Accepted. Acceptance was highest in the affective dimension, followed by cognitive, socio-cultural, and pedagogical contexts. Furthermore, results showed a weak positive correlation (r = .201) between perception and acceptance, yet statistically highly significant (p-value = .002). This means that as students’ positive perception of Filipino increases, their acceptance also rises, although the relationship is not strong. Overall, the study confirms that students’ positive attitudes toward Filipino significantly influence their acceptance of it as a medium of instruction in Social Studies. This highlights the crucial role of Filipino in shaping knowledge, identity, and culture within the academic context, and calls for deeper discourse on strengthening its use in higher education.
