Abstract:

Grammatical knowledge refers to the correct speaking and writing of the Filipino language. It serves as the very foundation and most crucial factor, which is why students need to possess broad knowledge in it to ensure an effective flow of communication and to elevate their academic performance in Filipino. This study aimed to examine the factors of grammatical knowledge and the academic performance of students in the Filipino subject within the Division of Biliran of School Year 2023- 2024. Using a descriptive survey method, 250 sixth-grade students and fifteen (15) teachers from elementary schools in the Division of Biliran served as respondents. The study revealed that most of the sixth-grade students are female, and their parents are only elementary school graduates, with most fathers working as sikad (pedicab) or motorcycle drivers and mothers staying at home, earning a monthly income of ₱9,000 and below. On the teachers’ side, the majority are female, in their middle ages (22–45 years old), married, possess Master’s units, and have 5 or more years of teaching experience, though most have not attended any workshops. In terms of grammatical knowledge, most students excelled in punctuation and vocabulary but showed weaknesses in Filipino phonetics or proper pronunciation. They were proficient in correct word usage and types of sentences according to use, but showed only moderate proficiency in periods and word stress. The majority of the students obtained grades ranging from 76–82 (Fair) from the first to the third quarter. There was no significant relationship between personal and socio-economic status and the students’ academic performance, except for the father’s education. Meanwhile, grammatical knowledge showed a significant relationship with the academic performance of the students. The researcher proposes the implementation of an Intervention Plan in Filipino to elevate the level of learning in the division.
