Abstract:
The study aimed to describe the voice of identity and personhood of the Surigaonon through ten selected songs of Zandro Urbiztondo. It specifically sought to portray their identity, practices, and appreciation of origin in order to develop a proposed program for the preservation of Surigaonon culture and identity. A qualitative content analysis was employed to examine the data. Thematic analysis and cultural theory were also used as foundational frameworks for the study. The findings revealed that the selected songs vividly depict the voice of Surigaonon identity and personhood. The songs reflect the Surigaonons’ deep appreciation for the natural heritage passed down by their ancestors, particularly nature as the primary source of livelihood. The distinct identity of the Surigaonon is not solely rooted in culture and tradition but is also shaped by nature, values, behavior, daily life, family, and social interactions that emphasize their strong sense of community. Unity is central to the Surigaonon’s aspirations, anchored in care, perseverance, endurance, and faith for the sake of family and community. Appreciation of origin signifies recognition of one’s heritage and serves as a powerful reminder of the traits and traditions that shape the identity of a Surigaonon. Based on the findings and conclusions, the study highlights the representation of Surigaonon identity and personhood through themes and lyrical interpretations of the songs. It is recommended that this study be used as a guide for future research on songs and culture.
