Abstract:
This study examined selected folk songs from Southern Cebu to reveal the deconstructive perspective on the way of life of the Cebuano. It sought to answer the following research problems: (1) the symbolism and representation found in the songs; (2) the cultural domains reflected; (3) the collective values expressed; and (4) the perspectives of the people manifested in the lyrics. The study employed a qualitative research design using a descriptive approach, specifically content analysis in examining the selected folk songs. The findings revealed that the voice of culture is strongly conveyed through symbolism and representation rooted in faith, behavior, and the bitter experiences of individuals. Human emotions emerged as the dominant medium of meaning in the songs. Different cultural domains were identified, namely: moral culture, social culture, religious culture, and lifestyle culture. The collective values that emerged pertain to relationships, customs and practices, morality, livelihood, and faith, with moral values being the most dominant. The perspectives expressed in the songs relate to life experiences, love, conduct and behavior, duties and responsibilities, culture, tradition, and beliefs. In general, the folk songs of Southern Cebu reflect the people’s values, perspectives, and way of life and give voice to their culture, beliefs, experiences, traditions, and practices. The study recommends further analysis of the image of Cebuano culture embedded in folk songs to deepen understanding of their cultural identity.
