Abstract:

The implementation of the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Program encountered significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted traditional face-to-face learning and forced educators to modify their teaching methods. The shift to alternative learning modalities, such as modular formats, led to a decline in student performance, particularly in skill-based subjects like TLE that heavily rely on hands-on experiences with tools and equipment. This study aims to assess the awareness, utilization, and perceived competence of Grade 9 and Grade 10 students concerning carpentry tools in an industrial arts context at Benguet State University – Secondary Laboratory School in the Philippines. To investigate these factors, a descriptive survey was conducted using a tailored questionnaire designed to measure students’ levels of awareness, extent of practice, and perceived level of competence with hand tools, power tools, and equipment. The survey results revealed significant differences between male and female students, with males exhibiting higher levels of awareness and practice in all categories. Furthermore, Grade 9 students showed greater awareness and self-efficacy in carpentry competencies compared to their Grade 10 counterparts. The study also established strong positive correlations between awareness, extent of practice, and perceived competence. With these outcomes, the researcher proposes the development of a comprehensive learning manual with worksheets aimed at enhancing students’ familiarity with carpentry tools and techniques. This resource is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, effectively bridging the gap between awareness and competence. Ultimately, this research serves as a strategic framework for educators and curriculum developers to design programs that prioritize hands-on application and experiential learning in industrial arts. The findings and recommendations of this study also offer valuable insights for future researchers exploring challenges in industrial arts education.
