Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the vocabulary of Generation Alpha in their communication skills in the Filipino language among Grade 5 and Grade 6 students in all public and private schools in the town of Bulan, Sorsogon. The research utilized a descriptive-analytical design. The total participants were 1,340 students from Grade 5 and Grade 6, along with 100 teachers from public and private schools. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and interviews to gather information on Generation Alpha vocabulary in both spoken and written Filipino communication. Thematic analysis was employed to determine the impact of using Generation Alpha vocabulary in Filipino communication. It was discovered that Generation Alpha has coined new words. The formation of Generation Alpha vocabulary was categorized into four types: reversal, abbreviation, spelling changes, and borrowing. Positive effects of using Generation Alpha vocabulary in Filipino communication emerged, including improved conversation fluency and enhanced listening experience for students. Ideas and information were conveyed clearly and comprehensively during discussions. However, negative effects were also identified, such as word confusion during conversations, decreased ability to create compositions like stories and essays, and challenges in using grammatical structures according to participants.
