Abstract:
Literature plays a significant role in our current lives and serves as a mirror of our past. The study aims to gather and analyze the folklore of the root name of chosen barangays in San Fernando, Cebu. Specifically, it analyzed the (1) classification of folklore, (2) theme, and (3) narrative of the origin of names of chosen barangays. The study utilized a qualitative method of research using a focused group discussion and an unstructured interview to correctly present the gathered data. The results revealed that the classification and themes of folklore are based on the originating concepts of the root names of barangays. It is also determined that the folklore of the chosen barangays was passed on throughout the generation through word of mouth for its easy widespread in different areas and neighboring barangays. Based on the findings, it is concluded that folklore has a connection with the root names of the chosen barangays in San Fernando. It also serves as a foundation that up to the present is still alive and remained anchored to the history of the Philippines which must be given further studies to widen the scope of Filipino literature in the field of folklore.
