Abstract:

This descriptive-correlational study examined the self-reported competence, professionalism, and organizational commitment of 500 full-time teachers from three selected higher education institutions in Guangdong Province, China. The institutions were purposively selected, while respondents participated through a nonprobability online voluntary-response procedure. Percentage, mean, ranking, and Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The largest age group was 36–45 years, most respondents held master’s degrees, and the largest length-of-service group had 6–10 years of service; slightly more than half of the respondents were male. They generally reported positive perceptions of competence, professionalism, and organizational commitment. Content/academic competence obtained the highest relative assessment, while digital and research competence obtained the lowest. Teachers’ character ranked highest in professionalism, whereas obligations and working relationships beyond the classroom ranked lowest. Affective commitment obtained the highest organizational-commitment assessment, while continuance commitment obtained the lowest. The reported dimension-level relationships among competence, professionalism, and organizational commitment were positive but generally very weak to weak. A professional development program was proposed to support digital and research competence, continual professional learning, professional collaboration, and supportive organizational conditions.
