Economic benefits, environmental awareness, and charging infrastructure as determinants of electric vehicle adoption in Bangkok

Abstract:

This study examined how perceived economic benefits, environmental awareness, and charging infrastructure influence consumer adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Bangkok, Thailand. It also described respondents’ demographic profiles, assessed the levels of these factors and EV adoption, tested differences in adoption across demographic groups, explored relationships among variables, and generated recommendations for EV entrepreneurs, policymakers, and prospective business operators. Data were collected through a survey of 400 EV consumers in Bangkok and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), including t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. Most respondents were male (62%), aged 30–35 years (44%), held a bachelor’s degree (58%), and were employees. Findings showed that consumer adoption of EVs differed significantly by gender, educational attainment, occupation, and monthly income at the 0.05 significance level. Pearson correlation results revealed positive, moderate, and statistically significant relationships between EV adoption and perceived economic benefits (r = .345, p < .01), environmental awareness (r = .264, p < .01), and charging infrastructure (r = .384, p < .01). Overall, better economic advantages, stronger environmental awareness, and more accessible charging infrastructure were associated with higher consumer adoption of electric vehicles in Bangkok. These results suggest that improving charging networks, emphasizing long-term cost savings, and increasing public awareness of environmental benefits may encourage broader EV adoption, while businesses can use the findings to refine marketing strategies and policymakers can design programs that support sustainable transportation and future investment decisions across diverse demographic groups and strengthen consumer confidence in emerging electric mobility initiatives.
