Abstract:
The study focused on the use of researcher-made pre-test and post-test as measuring tools in determining the academic performance of Grade 10 students in Araling Panlipunan. The participants were 44 Grade 10 students enrolled in the subject Contemporary Issues, comprising 25 females and 19 males. A letter was submitted to the School Principal to request permission to conduct the study, and consent forms were provided to the students prior to the conduct of the study. Hence, their participation was voluntary. The pre-test was administered before the lesson discussion, while the post-test was administered after the teacher had conducted the lesson. The findings revealed a significant difference between the students’ pre-test and post-test results. The paired-samples t-test showed a significant difference in the Grade 10 students’ performance in Araling Panlipunan before (M = 19.60, SD = 4.78) and after (M = 21.50, SD = 3.97) instruction, t(43) = 2.81, p = .007. The researcher also administered a survey questionnaire to determine the students’ perceptions of how the pre-test and post-test contributed to their learning and to provide a basis for identifying appropriate instructional interventions. Based on the findings, interventions such as differentiated instruction, remediation sessions, small-group instruction, peer-assisted learning, formative assessments, and timely feedback may be employed by teachers to address students’ learning needs and improve the teaching and learning process.
